Habitat Learn, begins implementing the first UDL (Universal Design for Learning) Classroom* alongside Humber Polytechnic and Apple

The UDL classroom is designed to remove barriers to learning through a multifaceted tech stack, aiming to provide equal access to education. TORONTO, ON - AUGUST 25, 2025

Many institutions want to do better when it comes to accessibility; however, the systems and solutions are often fragmented, retrofitted and incomplete.

Students may have access to accommodations, but those supports are frequently dependent on paperwork, wait times, or individual devices. Lectures may be recorded, but the sound is unreliable or stored, never to be used again. Captions exist, but only if someone requests them. Peers are often relied upon to take notes, but often lack consistency and continuity.

This is where the UDL classroom comes in to remove barriers and bridge gaps. By providing learning and accessibility tools for everyone, no one is left behind, and students have choice in how they learn.

The classroom includes features such as:

  • Professional notes distributed for the entire class
  • Captions are available at the front of the class as well as available on personal devices via a simple QR code
  • An inconspicuous camera can record and livestream the class, making it available for remote students and service providers.
  • Service providers can access the class remotely

“The UDL Classroom has been long in the making. Back in 2019, the prototype was piloted at Mohawk College and then George Brown College. I think collectively we’re in a position where it’s the right time and we’re working alongside the right entities to take this next step. Both Humber Polytechnic and Apple reflect our values of security, accessibility, and intuitive design, all of which are central to this project.”
Daniel Goerz, CEO at Habitat Learn

With 31% of students in Canada now self-reporting as having a disability, the UDL classroom is not only a welcomed, holistic approach to ensuring accessibility and equity in education it is also a cost-effective way for higher education institutions to stay compliant and reach targets.
*Our UDL classroom technology has patents granted and pending in several jurisdictions
